Ask any Malaysian which sport is closest to their heart and badminton will almost certainly top the list — right alongside football. There is something truly special about the bond between Malaysia and badminton. From the Sidek brothers putting the country on the world map, to the Datuk Lee Chong Wei era that had the entire nation glued to their television sets every time he stepped on court, badminton has never just been a sport here — it is part of who we are as a nation.
The new generation has not disappointed. Lee Zii Jia, with his aggressive and spirited playing style, has carried the torch of Malaysian badminton excellence. Women's doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah rose so rapidly that they became one of the top women's doubles partnerships in the world. Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in men's doubles have also continued to deliver impressive performances on the international stage.
